About the tour

Among the many ‘undiscovered” treasures of Southern Italy, the Royal Palace at Caserta is among the most astonishing. It is a much larger version of the Palace at Versailles and occupies over 1 million meters of space, it is, in fact, the world’s largest palace. It contains apartments and offices for the royal family and their entire administration, a library, a museum, an opera house, military barracks, and a university. An aqueduct was built just to supply water to the many fountains in its English gardens. A colony of silk weavers from France was established next to the palace to feed the unending need for curtains, banners, and dresses.

Our guide will walk you through the Royal Apartments and unfold the history of the Bourbon Kings of Naples whose reign preceded the unification of Italy in 1861. You'll learn about Queen Maria Carolina, sister of Marie Antoinette, and her mark on Southern Italian history including the importation of French chefs to the court of Naples. The last stop will be the English gardens where you may choose to rent a bicycle to explore the gardens.
