Italian American Heritage Class
Join us to discover the real Southern Italy, moving beyond the usual stereotypes. In this course, you’ll explore how centuries of different cultures have shaped the south, why its history stands apart from the rest of Italy, and how these differences still influence daily life. Whether you are curious about your roots or simply want a more authentic look at this fascinating region, you will leave with a deeper understanding and plenty of surprises along the way.

Discover the real story of Southern Italy in this accessible three-session course designed for anyone curious about their Italian roots or interested in the region’s fascinating history. Instead of repeating old stereotypes, these sessions reveal how Southern Italy’s unique mix of Greek, Arab, French, Spanish, and Norman influences shaped a culture and identity all its own—one that’s often misunderstood or overlooked both in Italy and abroad.
This 3-part course explores how, after Italy’s unification, the South faced social and economic challenges that still shape everyday life in the region today. Instead of simplifying the issues or romanticizing the past, participants will get a clear, honest look at why Southern Italy developed differently from the rest of the country, and what that means for millions of families—especially those with ancestors who emigrated to places like Argentina, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
Today, a new generation of Italians is reclaiming Southern Italy’s heritage, making this course especially valuable for anyone who wants to see beyond the clichés. It’s perfect whether you’re tracing your own family story or want to strengthen you're understanding of your cultural heritage.
